Ello
Ello.Co, The Social Network that grabbed a lot of attention a few months back is not looking to stop. When it initially raised 435,000$ , many tech journalists out-lashed on the internet, Warning us and Ello that investors were looking for a quick exit. At that time, The future of Ello was unclear and foggy.
Fast Forward 1 year, It now has a funding of 15 Million Dollars and is expanding rapidly. It’s former mission – To provide and ad-free,clutter free and well designed social network is challenging all rules.
It is constantly getting famous for it’s minimalistic design and it’s ad-free policies. Even after being online for more than 1 year and having more than half a million users, It still has no plans to put ads on the website.
After it went viral, It received a lot of criticism for not having a finished product as the site was crashing due to the huge server load. But now, They have a finished product with a very beautiful mobile app and are looking to market their product.
The major difference between Ello and Facebook is their strategies. Facebook has been surviving solely based on ads that the users click or see, While it would be offering memberships or different user levels to generate revenue. This is done not only by Facebook, but in fact all the other major social networks. While the social networks have found out different interactive ways to display ads, Ads are still ads.
Also, The design of all the social networks have been quite similar, With even the same algorithms and repeated content floating around. The design language was challenged by Tumblr, But that was a long time back. This is where Ello shines, atleast for me. I totally love their homepage and the way their newsfeed shows up – full screen.
I think that Ello definitely deserves success, but one thing that it needs is rigorous marketing and new features to attract users off the giant conglomerate Facebook.
Ello!
