1. Grand Theft Auto V
In an age where everyone likes to talk about games as service, free-to-play and mobile, GTA 5 has been a kind of dinosaur since launch in the fall. A sort of vicious, unstoppable dinosaur, smashing human cities to rubble as a way of reminding us that it does, in fact, still exist. 2. Minecraft
Five years after its initial release, the video game Minecraft is still bringing in huge revenue for its developer, Mojang AB. The Swedish video game company reported that its revenue increased to 2.07 billion Swedish kronor (or $330 million) in 2013, a 38 percent increase from the previous year, according to the Wall Street Journal. The company pulled in 816 million kronor ($129 million) in profit alone in 2013. Since it’s launch it has sold copies of Minecraft worth about $1.2 Billion ! However, Mojang , the company behind Minecraft recently got bought by Microsoft for $2.5 billion! This acquisition is a big plus for Mojang in terms of marketing, Minecraft still has a strong hold in the market and is continuing to reap profits.
3. Angry birds
The popular App Store hit is not stopping towards world domination! It’s been five years since the Angry Birds franchise first hit the app market, and the games have been downloaded more than two billion times and grossed over $733 Million. But this is only the money they have earned from the App Store but , the company made nearly half of its cash (paywall) on licensing agreements (over $200 million in all), up from 30% the year before. These cover everything from Angry Birds t-shirts, stuffed animals and cell phone covers to hats and shoes. Rovio even expanded its licensing agreement with mammoth toy-maker Hasbro this summer, and has plans to license the world’s largest Angry Birds theme park. If we include all the toys,agreements and downloads on the franchise, Angry Birds is worth well over a billion dollars.
4. Call of duty : Black Ops 2
Call of Duty lumbers along as the most powerful force in video game sales. Activision announced that Black Ops 2 hit $1 billion in just 15 days. It’s not hard to see why CoD does so well, aside from sheer momentum. The series has a consistent control on blockbuster pacing that no other game has been able to match, save Uncharted 2 – that extends out to the multiplayer, as well. You can play it in endless marathons or quickly digestible chunks. It sits neatly between casual and hardcore. The continuous sales value it around a mind boggling 4 Billion dollar game!
5. Super Mario Bros
Perhaps the biggest franchise in the history of gaming, The Super Mario series has sold 240 million copies worldwide since 1985. The New Super Mario Bros. Wii game launched in 2009 managed to break yet another record by selling more than 10 million copies in the U.S. The revenue of this game is highly secretive. According to some research though, Super Mario Bros franchise is worth a crazy 15 Billion dollars!!!
